Chiang Mai is the largest city in Northern Thailand and many times called by guidebooks (incorrectly) the second largest city in Thailand. A major tourist center, it is an area of contradictions and confusion.
Chiang Mai is said to have more than 1,000 temples and the old city, which is the center of town, is surrounded by a moat approximately 1 mile square.
Hugely dependent on the tourist dollar the streets are filled with “Night Market” stalls and “Walking Streets”. At the same time the residents depend on the local markets for their daily sustenance. Old style markets and modern shopping centers stand side by side.
Festivals abound and most every month has a holiday or a “Buddha Day”. Relaxed and laid back, mass congestion and pollution, all on the same days and in the same city.
