“The song is mainly a pop song, though at the time it could also have been classed as belonging to the dance music genre. The choruses (variations on the phrase “One night in Bangkok…”) were sung by Swedish artist Anders Glenmark. The verses could be described as a spoken rap by Head, a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek denunciation of the city’s moral corruption and comparative glorification of the intellectual purity of chess; e.g., Head remarks, “the queens we use would not excite you.”

The song’s lyrics contain a number of Bangkok-related references, among them the “muddy old river” (the Chao Phraya River), the “reclining Buddha” (the Wat Pho) Yul Brynner (famously remembered for playing the King of Siam in statue) and The King and I).”

    Hi Dave,
I just came across a news snippet. Remember the song ‘Walk like an Egyptian’ and who is in the doughnut shop? Apparently your ex-work colleagues still have a good sense of humour.

I think they could have come up with a better name. Actually a group of us in the town where I worked once considered this. We figured between the cops and the city’s Department of Public Works guys, we would be all set. Unfortunately on our salary no one could afford the investment.

I recall once while we had a line of cops to hold back some demonstrators. The demonstrators tied donuts on a string and hung them from a stick which they dangled in front of the cops faces. I was working undercover in amongst the demonstrators. Even I thought it was kind of funny.
