Introduction

For all the years I have been here in Thailand, it has been a goal of many to ride their own motorcycles into Vietnam and tour this Communist country. With only a couple exceptions, many have tried and most have failed. One friend, and very experienced world traveler, even had his Honda Goldwing Motorcycle flown into Hanoi. He figured he would be able to talk, cajole, or bribe whoever or whatever was necessary to get permission to ride through the country as part of his around the world expedition. He was almost immediately told to fly his motorcycle right back out again.

Now, with a little help (OK, with a lot of help) from my friends, it was our turn to try. And we did it!

Even though the four of us are all well experienced riders in S.E. Asia, this was to be an epic adventure for us. Not exactly as we planned, and not without some disagreement, but still a trip of a lifetime.

As stated elsewhere on my website; a lot of information is shared between my site and the GT-Rider Forum. This trip was written on GT-Rider by David Unkovich, with contributions from me and others. Many of my friends didn’t see it. It is only now that I am putting it on my website. The reason for this is it is longgggggggggg. We took hundreds of photos-David says he took more than 1,500 himself.

It would be a lengthy task, and rather silly, to transfer everything from GT-Rider to here. There are some interesting tales and facts if you have an interest in Laos and Vietnam life and travel. Even if you don’t wish to read them all, take the time to scroll through the photos. There are some classic shots that you will not find anywhere else.
