EARTHQUAKE

May 13, 2014 | | Comments 1

On May 5, 2014 while working on my computer, the desk and chair started to shake.  I felt this a few years ago when there was a 3.2 earthquake so i knew what it was. After a short pause I heard a rumble and everything in the house began to shake and rattle.  I made a quick exit out the back door.

Although it lasted probably only 30 seconds, it certainly got the heart beating.  There was no visible damage outside and only a few things fell from shelves inside the house. I returned to the internet to find the USGS recorded a 6.2 earthquake approximately 70 miles north of my home.  The epicenter was located in the Thai village of Mae Lao, not far from the major city of Chiang Rai.

Tremors have continued for days and again on May 12 a 5.0 quake was recorded in the same area.  Fortunately major damage is limited.  Many temples suffered some breakage and cracks and a number of houses damaged or collapsed.  There is only 1 reported fatality.

This is the 3rd earthquake I have felt here and is said to be the most severe ever recorded in Thailand.
